Every year, the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) hosts the Elizabeth Casson Memorial Lecture to honour an RCOT member whose peers consider them to have made and be making a significant contribution to the profession’s development.

The 2025 Lecturer is QMU Honorary Fellow Dr Charlie Chung.

As a consultant occupational therapist in NHS Lothian, Charlie is also Lothian AHP Stroke Strategic Lead and Long COVID Clinical Pathway Lead.

In addition to these professional roles, Charlie has been a committed member of the QMU Employer Mentoring Scheme.

The title of this year’s lecture is: Basic etiquette – do you hold the door open for others?

While addressing the occupational therapy profession specifically, Charlie’s lecture acknowledges the current pressures facing health and social care services and the “stress and moral injury” impact on those who work within these services. “Things are unlikely to change quickly so it’s up to us as individuals to support each other as a collective. We must think about the doors we should step through and the doors we can open for others. Your passion for making a difference in people's lives isn’t lost – it’s just on the other side of the door.”

To celebrate this lectureship, the QMU Occupational Therapy programme will be hosting a live screening of the virtual lecture.

All members of the QMU community are invited to join us on Wednesday 30th April 2025, from 6.30pm – 8pm, in Room 2156.
