Information for international students: Work placements, internships, and volunteering vs voluntary work
Work placements:
There are no restrictions on work placements if they are a requirement for the course. This means that placements can be full time even during term time, and students can do this while also working up to 20 hours per week on a Student visa.
Internships:
Internships work in the same way as work placements for QMU students and do not count towards your 20 hours per week of work allowed on a Student visa.
Volunteering:
There are no restrictions on volunteering if you do not have a contract and are not treated in the same way as an employee. You should not be paid for the role, although you can have your travel expenses covered.
Voluntary work:
This is unpaid employment and would count towards your weekly work hour allowance.
